Background & Importance

Australia’sMarket Development Facility (MDF) is currently supporting tourism businesses in Sri Lanka to adopt green solutions that improve efficiency, enhance competitiveness, and align with evolving global market trends and local regulatory requirements. This initiative contributes to Sri Lanka’s national vision for sustainable tourism.

As part of this effort, MDF is partnering with the National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) to provide sustainability training for up to 30 tourism businesses across the country. From this group, 10 businesses will be selected to receive comprehensive support in implementing tailored green solutions. These solutions will address:

  • Energy efficiency

  • Water conservation

  • Waste reduction

  • Sustainable material use

  • Renewable energy integration

  • Smart technologies

  • Carbon footprint assessment

Since the implementation of many of these solutions may involve significant investment, selected businesses will also be connected with banks and financial institutions to access climate finance. This financial facilitation aims to strengthen their understanding of funding opportunities and ease the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices.

Project Objectives

  • Promote sustainable tourism by equipping businesses with knowledge and tools for green transformation.

  • Improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact through tailored green solutions.

  • Strengthen business competitiveness in response to evolving global and local sustainability standards.

  • Build capacity of tourism stakeholders through targeted training and technical support.

  • Facilitate access to climate finance to support the implementation of resource-efficient and low-carbon technologies.

  • Encourage inclusive sustainability by integrating accessibility and social responsibility considerations into business practices.

Project Component

The project is structured around three key components aimed at advancing sustainable and inclusive tourism practices in Sri Lanka. These components are designed to build awareness, implement practical green solutions, and foster inclusive and climate-conscious business models.

Component 1: Awareness and Capacity Building for Green Tourism

Objective: Equip tourism businesses with the knowledge and skills to adopt sustainable practices and improve operational efficiency.

  • Background Study & Sector Profiling:
Analyze energy, water, and waste trends in Sri Lankan tourism to inform program design and participant selection.

  • Hotel Selection & Criteria Development:
Identify and shortlist up to 30 hotels (from a maximum pool of 50) using transparent selection criteria based on sustainability potential.

  • Tailored Capacity Building:
Deliver targeted training to 20–30 tourism businesses in three batches, focusing on green skills including energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management.

Component 2: Integration of Green Practices & Climate Finance Access

Objective: Support tourism businesses in embedding sustainability into core strategies and enabling access to green finance.

  • Green Solution Assessments & Implementation Plans:
Select 10 high-potential hotels for in-depth support including energy audits, carbon footprinting, and waste assessments.

  • Investment-Grade Analysis & Finance Facilitation:
Provide each selected hotel with an implementation plan and investment-grade report to support applications for climate finance from banks and other institutions.

Component 3: Inclusive and Sustainable Tourism

Objective: Promote disability-inclusive practices within the tourism industry alongside environmental sustainability.

  • Disability Inclusion Capacity Building:
In partnership with the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon (EFC), train up to 20 tourism businesses on creating inclusive workplaces and improving accessibility for guests with disabilities.

  • Holistic Sustainability Models:
Help businesses integrate inclusive and environmentally responsible practices into their operations for long-term impact.
